HOW A WOOD HAMMMER MILL WORK?

The working principle of a hammer mill wood shredder, simply put, is as follows: Raw materials are first evenly fed into the wood hammer mill via an automatic feeder. Then, high-speed rotating hammers repeatedly strike and grind the material (approximately 1500-3000 rpm), pulverizing it into fine particles. The pulverized wood chips are then passed through a screen and conveyed to the next process by airflow or a belt conveyor. The entire process is completed within a sealed shredding chamber and can be summarized into four core steps: “feeding – impact shredding – screening – output.”
Uniform Feeding
This step is generally accomplished by an automatic feeder and a belt conveyor working together. Wood chips are fed into the shredder’s inlet. Feeding must be uniform, and the speed should be adjustable to prevent uneven wear on the hammers.
High-Speed Impact Crushing
The motor drives the main shaft and hammers to rotate at high speed. Upon entering the shredding chamber, the wood is immediately and violently struck by the high-speed hammers, instantly shattering it. The fragments fly at high speed towards the toothed plates on the inner wall of the shredder, where they are further broken up and bounce back onto the hammer path. Simultaneously, the rotating hammers generate a high-speed airflow, accelerating and colliding the material within this airflow, creating a “double crushing” effect. It’s important to note that the moisture content and hardness of the raw material directly determine the design of the rotor and hammers.
Sieving through the screener
A screen is installed at the bottom of the crushing chamber. Powder meeting the required fineness passes through the screen and is discharged, while material that doesn’t meet the standard remains in the chamber for further crushing until it can pass through the screen.
Output and discharging
Finally, the crushed wood chips are extracted by a blower and collected by a belt conveyor or screw conveyor for transport to the next process. The hardness of the wood, the crusher’s output, and the final size requirements will determine the design of this final conveying process.
In summary, hammer mills have a simple structure and high production efficiency. Through a cyclical process of “feeding, impacting, colliding, sieving, and output,” they can efficiently convert wood waste into valuable biomass raw materials.

The following is a breakdown of the core structure of a wood hammer mill shredder system, listed by function and structure:
1. Feeding System
Composed of a underground feeder and a feeding conveyor, it controls the uniform entry of wood chips or blocks into the shredding chamber, preventing material rebound and splashing. Some models are equipped with a strong magnetic separator roller, suitable for wood chips, blocks, and other irregularly shaped materials, with a maximum material size of 10 cm (smaller is better).
2. Crushing & Milling System (Core Structure)
- Rotor Assembly: Mounted on the crusher’s main shaft, it consists of a rotor frame, hammer pins, spacer sleeves, and hammers. The hammers are heat-treated and coated with a wear-resistant coating, making them wear-resistant and allowing for symmetrical rotation, extending their service life.
- Toothed Plate and Liner: Fixed to the inner wall of the shredding chamber, these form a shearing and grinding gap with the hammers. After being struck by the hammers, the material impacts the toothed plate, achieving secondary crushing.
- Bottom Screen: Surrounding the center and bottom of the rotor, its aperture size determines the fineness of the finished product (typically φ3~30mm) and the machine’s output. Substandard material is repeatedly struck by the hammers until it passes through the screen holes.
3. Material Collection and Discharge System
- Centrifugal Fan: Connected to the main unit via duct, it forcibly extracts the undersized powder and transports it through pipelines to a cyclone dust collector for air-material separation. It then connects to a bag filter to filter air containing fine dust, ensuring a safe working environment.
- Discharge Device (e.g., windproof device): Ensures air-material separation and prevents dust spillage.
4. Transmission and Support System
- Motor and Pulley: Power is transmitted via a V-belt. The main shaft speed is typically 1500~3000rpm, providing high-velocity hammer impact energy.
- Frame and Bearing Housing: Constructed from heavy-duty welded steel plates, providing sufficient overall rigidity. The bearing housing is equipped with a dustproof seal to withstand high-dust conditions.
5. Safety and Auxiliary Devices
These include overload protection (current relay), emergency stop rope, inspection door (with safety interlock), and shock-absorbing pads to ensure operational safety.
The above structures together constitute a highly efficient and durable crushing unit. The various systems work together to complete the main workflow of “feeding-impact-collision screening-conveyance”.

If you want to use the wood sawdust in wood pellets, then the screen size is 12mm, 10mm etc, if you want to applicate the boilers as fuel, the screen size is 12mm, 14mm etc.
The wood raw material moisture content is a key factors affecting hammer mill output and design.
The industrial wood hammer mill should be designed for your wood types and fiber feature. You know, when the wood has high moisture content, the final product wood sawdust, will stick to the inside of the crusher, which reduces the capacity, so the machine must be designed to avoid clog when it’s fresh and high wet. If your wood moisture content is too low and also very soft, a large quantity of dust will be produced when crushing. The dust collection system needs to be customized to ensure production efficiency.
