WHAT RAW MATERIALS CAN THE WOOD DRUM CHIPPER PROCESS?

Waste-Wood
Coconut-Shell
Palm-Tree-Leaves
EFB
Bamboo

The biggest advantage of drum chippers is their exceptional adaptability to raw materials. They can efficiently process various types of wood materials and also crush various non-wood fibers, making them a crucial component in many production lines. Therefore, they can also be called biomass crushers or biomass chippers. The raw materials they can process can be mainly divided into two categories:

DWC03

Wood Waste and Forest Waste

  • Wood Logs and Small-Diameter Timber: Can directly cut logs into wood chips, mainly used in board mills, paper mills, and biomass fuel pellet plants. Suitable for processing small-diameter timber and thinnings with diameters of 120-300mm.
  • Forest Residues: Efficiently processes forestry waste such as wood branches, wood twigs, and wood saplings.
  • Wood Processing Residues and Cutoffs: Suitable for processing veneer, wood strips, log cores, waste veneer, construction waste formwork, waste wooden pallets, and other factory scraps.

DWC04

Non-Wood Materials and Agricultural Waste

  • Bamboo and Sugarcane: bamboo, reeds, sugarcane bagasse, etc., often used as a primary raw material for engineered wood products or biomass energy
  • Straw and hemp: agricultural fiber waste such as cotton stalks, corn stalks, sorghum stalks, flax stalks, and palm leaves for biomass power generation.
  • Others: Coconut shells, palm tree waste, empty fruit bunches ( EFB), corn cobs, and various other agricultural wastes.

HOW DOES A DRUM WOOD CHIPPER WORK?

The working principle of a drum wood chipper machine can be summarized by four closely linked steps: feeding, pressing the raw material, cutting into chips, and screening and discharging.

  1. Raw material feeding: Raw materials are fed into the inlet of the drum chipper via a belt conveyor or chain feeder.
  2. Feeding rollers press the fed raw material and convey it into the chipping chamber: The feeding and pressing device consists of upper and lower feeding rollers and a hydraulic system. The rotating feeding rollers clamp and press the raw material, pushing it into the cutting chamber at a specific speed (customized according to the customer’s raw material). The hydraulic system allows the upper feeding roller to suspend and move, automatically adapting to the thickness of the raw material and preventing jamming.

  1. High-speed cutting by the chipping rollers: The motor drives the chipping rollers, whose surfaces are equipped with flying knives, to rotate at high speed. When the raw material contacts the chipping rollers, the flying knives and the fixed blades working together to create a shearing action, chipping the wood into wood chips of a designed length.
  2. Screening and discharging: The wood chips are discharged towards the screen surrounding the cutter rollers due to the inertia of the rollers. Wood chips that meet the required size fall through the sieve holes (size can be customized) and are discharged at the bottom discharging belt conveyor; oversized wood chips remain in the chipping chamber to continue to be cut until they meet the required size.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST DRUM WOOD CHIPPER?

How to choose the best drum wood chipper? Several factors need to be considered, including raw material type, output matching, and after-sales costs.

Step 1: Assess your raw material type and output requirements.

Many novice customers don’t start by assessing their raw material type, output, and requirements; instead, they directly compare prices. This is incorrect and often leads to after-sales problems. For example, if your raw material is wood, the diameter, length, and desired chip size all need to be considered to determine the model. Many beginners only consider output requirements, which is a common mistake. The diameter and shape of the wood are crucial; for instance, square scrap wood, especially hardwood, is much more difficult to process than logs.

Step 2: Choose a professional drum chipper manufacturer that can provide expert advice and excellent after-sales service.

Professional advice can help you avoid many subsequent problems during the production stage. For example, if you choose a drum chipper for use in a wood pellet production line, the feeding system and cutter rollers can be customized to produce raw material sizes within 15mm. This greatly helps ensure high output and prevents blockages in the next stage of the crusher. High-quality and professional after-sales service can directly determine whether your project is profitable. Jinkun Machinery has more than 20 years of design and R&D experience and a professional after-sales team, making it a partner you can trust.

DRUM WOOD CHIPPER DESIGN STRUCTURE & DRAWING

Drum Wood Chipper Design

Belt Feeder or Chain Feeder

The first part of a drum chipper is the feeding system, which consists of two main parts: the feed trough and the feed rollers. There are two types of feed troughs: belt-driven and chain-driven. Belt-driven feed troughs are mainly used in small chippers, which have lower output and a smaller size, and are generally fed manually. Therefore, belt-driven feed troughs are durable enough. Large wood chippers, to achieve high output and efficiency, usually use a grab feeder, and therefore often employ a chain-driven conveyor. However, chain-driven feeders can also be custom-made for small drum chippers.

Drum Wood Chipper Main Part

Inside a wood chipper includes blades rollers, flying knives, fixed knives, and screen etc. The number of flying knives can be customized based on factors such as the type of raw material, moisture content, and the final use and final size of the raw material. The flying knives and fixed knives require regular inspection, sharpening, or replacement based on wear conditions, as they are wear parts. The lifespan of the flying knives is related to their material and daily operating time. The space between the two types of knives also directly affects the uniformity and output of the finished product. Therefore, standardized training for workers is crucial.

Wood Chips Discharge Belt Conveyors

The finished wood chips or crushed raw materials will fall onto the discharge conveyor belts. Generally, there are two designs for the discharge conveyor belt: using a bent discharge conveyor belt or using two discharge conveyor belts, one located at the bottom of the chipper and the other used to stack the wood chips. Based on our many years of manufacturing experience and customers’ feedback, the failure rate of the secondary design is much lower than that of the first design. Therefore, all JK discharge systems use a two-discharge conveyor belt design although the production cost is higher.

DRUM WOOD CHIPPER PARTS AND MAINTENANCE

how-to-fix-flying-blades
how to fix flying blades

The main wear parts of the drum wood chipper parts are the flying blades and the fixing blades. Because the hardness of wood varies, the hardness of the blades used must also differ, requiring regular inspection and maintenance based on usage time.

The material and hardness of the flying blades are particularly critical. Harder blades are not necessarily always; adjustments need to be made based on the wood moisture content and wood hardness. All JK chipper blades are designed and manufactured by ourselves, ensuring maximum quality stability.

Daily maintenance of wood chipper involves only two tasks: adding grease to the bearings every 3-5 days and sharpening the drum wood chipper blades periodically based on their wear condition. Therefore, using and maintaining a JK wood chipper is very simple. However, one important point to note is that when replacing blades, the fixing screws must be tightened securely to prevent the blades from falling off. If you would like to know the correct replacement procedures, please contact us for relevant information.

DRUM CHIPPER VS DISC CHIPPER

The core difference between drum chippers and disc chippers lies in their range of raw material processing capabilities. One is a versatile machine for handling irregularly shaped waste, while the other is an expert in producing high-quality good shape wood chips. We will explain the differences between these two machines from several aspects.

Structural and Design Differences:

Drum chippers have their cutting blades mounted on a cylindrical drum. During operation, the drum roller rotates at high speed to cut the raw material. Disc chippers have their cutting blades mounted on the end face of a steel disc. As the disc rotates, the blades cut across the wood fibers at an angle close to 90 degrees, creating a shearing effect.

Different Applicable Raw Materials:

Drum chippers are more adaptable and excel at processing irregularly shaped wood waste (bark, strips, branches, veneer scraps, etc.). They are also suitable for small-diameter timber, non-wood materials (such as bamboo, cotton stalks, etc.), and crop straw. Disc chippers have a narrower range of raw materials and are mainly used for cutting straight, large-diameter logs.

Drum and disc chippers have different applicable fields. The type you choose depends on your raw materials and intended use. For more information, please see this link.

THE FACTORS INFLUENCE THE WOOD CHIPS QUALITY AND DRUM WOOD CHIPPER CAPACITY?

wood-chips-chipper-production-line

Many beginners encounter problems when using drum chippers, the most common being irregularly shaped (oversized) wood chips or low wood chipping machine output. The factors affecting wood chip quality and chipping machine output can be summarized into the following three reasons. Understanding these factors will help you better balance wood chip quality and chipper output.

  1. Insufficient blade sharpness leads to irregularly shaped or excessively long wood chips, significantly reducing chipper output. The solution is simple: remove the fly knife and sharpen it, or replace it with a new blade.
  2. Excessive gap between the fly knife and the base knife due to blade wear or delayed replacement: A gap exceeding 1mm affects the shearing action of the chipper blades, producing a lot of scrap. The ideal gap between the fly knife and the base knife is typically between 0.5-1mm.
  3. If the above two aspects are not the problem, then the machine itself may have a design flaw, such as insufficient power leading to low output, or defective blades causing them to dull easily, resulting in low output.

If you can tell me the main raw materials you will be processing (such as veneer or branches) and the intended use of the wood chips, our engineers can provide more specific advice. Please feel free to contact us.
